WHY IS THE 2025 GOVERNMENT CLOSURE DIFFERENT?

The Constitution requires Congress to produce a budget, but it doesn't establish the rules for doing so. That's left to the politicians.

Since 1980 the U.S. has seen government closures become common practice especially when congress is controlled by a different party than the whitehouse.

In 2025 the GOP controls both the houses of Congress and the Whitehouse, but the Democrats are employing the Senate's open debate tradition, the filibuster, to keep the budget from coming up for a vote.
