Today was a ridden session, without taking her around the school as we were in there yesterday, mounted fairly quickly but still pulling faces so worked on that before I got on her, it has become a habit for her and is proving difficult to break but I'll keep working on it as it's a daily task in many situations. She is a sensitive horse and learns quickly but I like to keep her busy without putting too much pressure on her and as with the lunge session yesterday I do just enough to see how she copes without getting too upset and if she does then we just keep practicing with stops, backups, turns and encourage her to lower her head and neck. All her baggage is left over from her racing days more than 10 years ago before becoming a broodmare.
I have decided to have front shoes on her now as she really struggles on stoney surfaces and the boots are not really cutting it, although she is far more comfortable in them they are not reliable.
Mounting is still a bit of an issue with her and this time she side stepped, not done this before so need to go through everything to make sure she is not uncomfortable. She only shows this behaviour when using the stirrup to mount even before I put any weight on it.
Following this session I worked on the mounting in the yard, where we have a couple of mounting blocks. This time I used treats, (carrots), and it worked and she eventually stood with no face pulling while I put my foot in the stirrup and got on, no video, rode around the car park outside and up the main drive into the estate, there are other stable blocks, this the first time I have ridden her anywhere else other than the school. So I will be trying this again in the school probably new years day.
