Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) was a German Jesuit scholar, polymath, and inventor, known for his vast curiosity and contributions to many fields. One of the first egyptologists, he attempted to decipher hieroglyphs and, even if his interpretations were incorrect, he is considered a precursor to Egyptology.
