Right after a jury returns a guilty verdict for murder, chaos erupts at the door of Judge John Stevens Jr.’s courtroom. As families and supporters are leaving, a full-on fist fight breaks out in the hallway—chairs breaking, people swinging, and security rushing in.
Back on the bench, Judge Stevens watches the video and brings everyone involved back into court. He tells them this is a court of justice, not a schoolyard, and blasts them for acting like “cavemen” throwing punches at the entrance to his courtroom.
He then:
Finds all three participants in criminal contempt of court
Orders them arrested immediately
Sets $1,000 bond each
Warns they face up to six months in jail for turning the courthouse into a boxing ring
Judge Stevens reminds everyone that even in the most emotional cases, including infamous murder trials, justice must be done through the rule of law, not violence in the hallway.
👉 What do YOU think?
Should people who fight in a courthouse go to jail for contempt?
Did Judge John Stevens Jr. handle this the right way?
