LED, Metal Halides OR…? Reef lighting Episode # 2

A light discussion of lighting and why there is still controversy. Since the beginning of the hobby, there has always been some debate about the best method of lighting a reef tank. The hobby has seen lighting progress from fluorescent tubes to metal halides of varying color temperatures to t-5s and LEDs. Clearly, they all work as there has been a success regardless of which lighting choice has been used.
Cost, marketing, heat, ease of changing the bulbs, and other factors have been considered. In this video, we have tried to demonstrate the pros and cons of halides and LEDs, with even a little sunlight thrown in for comparison. Not only were the PAR, actual spectrum, and physical temperature of these lights compared, but also the amount of UV A and UV B produced by these lights was measured as well.
We realize that we still do not understand the benefit or negative impact of this type of radiation on the coral's health, coloration, or growth, but at least now there is some basis for comparison.
In the future, we plan to experiment to see the benefit of providing this light for the corals. We hope that this presentation of light will generate even more discussion and that we all learn as a result.
