The Indian Air Force has quietly crossed the point of no return on the Tejas Mk2. What began as a cautious commitment of "around 120+" aircraft has, in closed-door meetings through 2025, hardened into a firm requirement for at least 220-250 airframes over the next 15 years. Senior IAF officers have repeatedly told the Ministry of Defence that six to seven Mk2 squadrons are the absolute minimum needed to replace retiring MiG-21s, Mirage 2000s, and Jaguar fleets while the AMCA is still maturing.
Yet HAL, already choking on 180 Tejas Mk1A, 156 LCH Prachand, Su-30 upgrades, and helicopter orders, cannot deliver more than 16-18 Tejas Mk2 per year even after the new production line at Nashik comes online in 2029-30. Simple arithmetic shows that at HAL's current and projected rate, the last Mk2 would roll out sometime after 2045. That is simply unacceptable for a fighter needed in squadron service by 2032-33.
