Breastfeeding with the correct latch and position plays a crucial role in stimulating breast milk production. A proper latch occurs when the baby’s mouth covers the entire nipple and most of the areola, typically about 1 to 1.5 cm from the base of the nipple.
During feeding, the baby’s tongue and lips stimulate key nerve points on the breast — around the 5 o’clock position on the left breast and the 7 o’clock position on the right breast. These are the most sensitive areas responsible for triggering milk production and milk let-down reflex.
If the baby does not latch correctly, mothers may experience nipple pain, soreness, or discomfort, and milk stimulation may become less effective. Ensuring a deep, correct latch not only helps increase milk supply but also makes breastfeeding more comfortable for both mother and baby.
