Thank goodness bees are generally quite predictable. When I didn’t get a proper grip on the queen, she took off. In that circumstance, it’s good to know she will never go that far and will, more often than not, come back to the swarm; after all, the best protection a swarm can offer a queen is a place to hide among the crowd.
If the queen takes flight when working hives, standing still for as long as possible is good practice. The queen might well use the beekeeper as a visual orientation reference, and if the beekeeper moves, it may disorientate the queen, and she may not be able to find her way back to the hive.
