2006-2015 Gen2 Yamaha FZ1 Gear Indicator Install (Fits other Yamaha's and my video makes it simple!)

After driving stick shift (manual transmission) vehicles for so long I noticed that a motorcycle had no indication of what gear you're in. The top of every stick shift handle is an imprinted stamp with the gears based on orientation and location. On a motorcycle you just learn that from the Nuetral position, 1st is down, and the rest go up from 2-5 gears (or 6 like the FZ1) unless you switch it upside down for racing.

You get used to it over time, but I'd always wondered what it would take to set up a gear indictator on my FZ1. After owning this bike for 7 years I finally got around to it! After much research and deliberation, I came to rest on this brand for 2 main reasons: 1. For ease of install in that it includes a factory Yamaha style wiring connector to slip between the OEM diagnostics wiring, so there are only 2 wires that need to be spliced in. And 2. The price point for this kit is well within range for anyone to be able to purchase it.

There are 3 colors to choose from, Red, Green, or Blue. The blue and green both had negative reviews because they were hard to see, so I chose red. The overall reviews for this item were good to great. The reviews that gave less than 4 stars seemed to be because of installation failure or wrong part purchased which is the buyers issue not the seller IMO.

It will take you longer than a few minutes to install because you have to take both left and right half cowl side covers off (the black vented looking pieces), and the plastic tank cowl on the front (mine is white but the color will match your bike). Last you can remove the 2 side bolts on the tank and lift the tank and insert a prop rod of some kind in the specially made divot in the top of the air box against the inside edge of the tank to hold it up.

Now that the tank is propper up lets get to wiring! Disconnect the factory 3-wire white connectors and insert the ATFWEL 3-wire white connectors into the plugs you just unplugged on the bike. After that find the wires for the black connector that's located closer to the front of the bike that lead to the Crankshaft Position Sensor, and splice in the black wire with the green stripe from ATFWEL i to the gray wire(this is not clear in the instruction BTW), then find the brown connector (for the rear brake light switch if you need to follow the wire up from there) near to the right side of the cavity under the tank and find the brown wire and splice the black wire with the green stripe from ATFWEL into the brown wire or the corresponding black wire on the other side of the connector as I did in the video.

That's it for the install now you need to button the bike all back up after you've picked which location you want the gear indictator to sit, it can be flush mounted using the double sided foam tape anywhere on the dash, or you can use the round clamp holder that mounts to the bar that came in the kit like I show in the video. Last steps are to follow the directions to set up the gear indictator based on the number of gears you have on your bike.
