Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, Israel has violated the agreement more than 500 times, killing and injuring hundreds of Palestinians. Yet, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the second phase of the truce is close. It includes disarming Hamas and deployment of an international stabilisation force in the besieged enclave. The ceasefire’s first phase saw Israeli troops withdraw to positions behind the so-called yellow line, which still allows Israel to occupy more than half of the Strip. Israel’s army chief, Eyal Zamir’s, recent statement that the current demarcation is a ‘new border’ has sparked fears that Tel Aviv will use the agreement to draw new illegal borders. With the first phase of the ceasefire bringing little relief to Gazans, what should be expected from the second phase?
