Is Igboland home to one of the most ancient human civilizations?
Across southeastern Nigeria, archaeological discoveries continue to challenge mainstream narratives about history, technology, and the origins of culture.
In this documentary, we explore five extraordinary ancient Igbo sites whose artifacts have stunned researchers and historians around the world.
🔶 Ugwuele (Ngogo Ancient Kingdom): Prehistoric Axe Heads
Located in Uturu, Ugwuele is one of the largest Stone Age sites in Africa.
Thousands of hand-axes, blades, and bifacial stone tools were uncovered here, suggesting a long period of habitation and advanced tool-making traditions dating deep into prehistory.
🔶 Lejja Iron Smelting Site
At Lejja, researchers found hundreds of massive iron slag blocks and ancient furnaces.
This is evidence of a sophisticated iron-smelting culture, with some slag formations linked to early iron technology long before many other regions adopted it.
The site points to a metallurgical tradition that was ritual, political, and economic.
🔶 Igbo-Ukwu Artifacts
Unearthed in the 1930s and 1950s, the bronze works at Igbo-Ukwu demonstrate metal-casting skills unmatched for their era.
Lost-wax technique, intricate detailing, spirituality, and royalty all converge here.
These artifacts reveal a society with complex trade, beliefs, and aesthetics — centuries before contact with Europe.
🔶 Nsude Pyramids
On the hills of Nsude stand ancient terraced pyramid structures.
Built in circular tiers of decreasing size, they resemble step pyramids and have been compared to ancient Nubian forms.
Their purpose remains debated, but religious, political, and astronomical interpretations are all on the table.
🔶 Ikom Monoliths (Akwanshi Stones)
In Cross River stands a field of engraved basalt monoliths, each carrying mysterious symbols.
Some resemble human faces, others geometric patterns.
Scholars link them to ancestral worship, territorial marking, and early governance systems.
