With 2025 and another Chopin comp on the horizon, why don’t we take a moment to remember its first ever winner? Lev Oborin (1907-1974) was just twenty when his teacher Konstantin Igumnov recommended him for the inaugural International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. His victory would establish Russia in the public eye as a producer of great Chopin interpreters, making Oborin a deceptively important figure in musical history. Unfortunately he’s not thought of often these days, his many fantastic solo recordings being swallowed up by a massive discography of chamber music in collaboration with David Oistrakh. The two would even go on to publish editions of Beethoven’s violin sonatas, which are used frequently to this day in Russia.
Taking a few steps away from Chopin, here's a fascinating 1961 radio broadcast of Prokofiev’s third piano concerto. It’s a remarkable performance, powerful yet featuring many delightful nuances—particularly in the gorgeous slow movement.
I. Andante - Allegro 0:00
II. Theme and Variations. Andantino 9:15
III. Allegro, ma non troppo 17:55
Conductor: Alois Klima
Orchestra: Czech Radio Symphony
