Over the last five years, 351 persons died and 970 were injured in 200 consequential railway accidents, data shared by the Indian Railways from 17 railway zones reveal.

1. Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, Odisha - June 2, 2023
Over 290 people lost their lives and over 900 were injured in a horrific triple train crash in Odisha involving the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train in Odisha.

2. Andhra Pradesh train collision: On October 29, 2023,
A train collision between the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train and the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train in Andhra Pradesh left 14 passengers dead. According to the officials, the accident took place after one of the passenger trains overshot a signal.

3. Bihar North East Express Derailment: On the night of October 11, 2023,
Six coaches of the 12506 Anand Vihar Terminal-Kamakhya Junction North East Express derailed near Buxar’s Raghunathpur Railway Station in Bihar in which four people died while over 70 others were injured.

4. Lucknow-Rameshwaram Bharat Gaurav train fire - Aug 25, 2023:
As many as nine passengers died while 20 others were injured after a fire broke out in the Lucknow-Rameshwaram Bharat Gaurav train which was halted near the Madurai junction at around 5.15 am on August 25, 2023. According to the initial inquiry, it came to the fore that the passengers had smuggled a gas cylinder on the train and cooked in the coach, when the blaze erupted.

5. Kanchanjunga Express accident - June 17, 2024
A goods train collided with the passenger train Agartala-Kanchanjunga Express near Rangapani railway station in Darjeeling district, leading to the death of at least nine people and close to 41 people injured.

The collision also ignited political controversy, as the signalling system of the rails were discussed to be faulty, due to which the freight train rammed into the Kanchanjunga Express. The drivers of both the trains did not survive the crash.

Some rail authorities claimed that the loco pilot was driving at a higher speed, which led to immense backlash from railway unions, who said that the ministry was passing on the blame on the driver before an inquiry.

6. Chandigarh-Dibrugarh train derailment - July 18, 2024
12 coaches of the Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express derailed in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, leading to at least four people dead and 31 injured.
Eight coaches of the train 15904 derailed between Motiganj and Jhilahi stations, while the rest came off farther ahead.

The Howrah-Mumbai Mail is the recent addition to a growing list of train derailments and accidents this year. On Tueday, the passenger train collided with another derailed goods carrier, leading to two deaths and over 20 people injured. This is the third train accident in in the country in the last two months alone and sixth this year.
