Sonic the Hedgehog - RetroAchievements

For Game #8 we bring Sonic into the picture with the original Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis.

I didn't have a Genesis and by default didn't get to play much Sonic growing up. That said, one of my best friends had a Genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and I always loved playing it. I have beaten Sonic 1 on emulator a few times, but it had been 5-10 years since I last played it.

Anyways, holy crap, I forgot how much slower paced Sonic 1 is compared to 2. I still enjoy the game, but I definitely prefer Sonic 2 to Sonic 1 (I still have yet to play Sonic 3). Not having spin dash is weird, and this game has a lot more lag compared to Sonic 2.

The good news is this achievement set is really easy outside of 2 achievements IMO: South Island Champion (complete deathless run) and Under-achiever (basically, get 0 score until Robotnik in Green Hill).

For deathless, man, I SUCKED. I should have done this MUCH more efficiently, and this is the reason why the video is as long as it is. My biggest mistake was not looking at a map for Labyrinth and Scrap Brain and not studying a few easier routes/shortcuts beforehand. Once I did that, it became easier.

The other problem is I am very impatient, and I tend to play better when I go fast. I had too many dumb deaths in Marble Zone or Spring Yard just because I will think "oh I can hit that cycle" and I die via collision (there were a couple deaths where I got scammed though). So, once I stopped doing that, I started getting to at least Labyrinth and sometimes Scrap Brain more often.

As for Under-achiever, it really wasn't too bad. You just need to learn the best route for each Act in Green Hill and not accidentally slip up. Deathless was definitely harder to me.

Anyways, besides my deathless struggles, this was really fun to play again, and a good set overall.
