Supreme Court same-sex marriage hearing LIVE: A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court on Tuesday began hearing a batch of petitions seeking legal validation for same-sex marriages in the country. The petitions were earlier opposed by the Centre, which said same-sex marriage is an “urban elitist concept far removed from the social ethos of the country". The Centre also stated that the issue cannot be decided by the Court of Law, rather lies in the domain of the parliament to amend the law, if at all. In a fresh application on the eve of the hearing, the Centre asked the Supreme Court to first decide on the maintainability of the pleas before delving into the issue regarding legalisation of same-sex marriages. Meanwhile, the hearing and the consequential outcome will have significant ramifications for the country where common people and political parties hold divergent views on the subject.
