In this easy to follow guide I will show you every step to change a broken rear coil spring on a car. I demo this on my Z4 E86 on the nearside rear coil spring (this will be the Drivers side rear spring for North America viewers!) but the process is very similar on both sides of the car (i.e. Offside rear spring / passenger side rear spring in NA).

In particular, a good reference for the following BMW cars made during the 2000’s:

BMW 3 series E46

BMW Z4 E85, E86
BMW 1 series E81, E82, E87, E88
BMW X3 E83

If you have a broken rear coil spring, at first, you may not even notice but often the car will ride a little lower, maybe scrape on speed bumps or rub in the wheel arches over bumps.

However, the suspension won’t perform as it should, so you are best to change the broken rear spring as soon as you can! Also, you should always change the rear springs in pairs.

The spring change DIY process is pretty generic and so will probably be very similar for other car manufacturers too, as long as they are fitted with rear coil springs that are independent to the shock absorber.
