During my visit to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, I witnessed something that most of us only read about in the news. At 2:30 AM, in the middle of my stay in a quiet hotel room, the sudden wail of air raid sirens shattered the silence of night. Within minutes, the entire neighborhood around me came alive in panic — people rushing down from their apartments, carrying children, guiding elders, all heading towards the nearest bomb shelters.
In Ukraine, these shelters are often the metro stations, built deep underground since Soviet times, designed to withstand bombardments. As I looked out of my window, drones began to fly over the city, and the deafening sound of anti-aircraft guns firing back filled the skies.
I finally decided to head out myself. Once inside a bunker, what I saw was nothing short of heartbreaking — hundreds of infants, kids, elderly people, and families huddled together , all trying to make it through yet another night of war. This has been a reality for Ukrainians for over three years now: countless nights without sleep, endless fear, and the uncertain hope of survival.
The bombardments shook the ground so strongly that vibrations could be felt even deep underground. The atmosphere was heavy with tension, and as I sat on the cold station floor with everyone else, I realized how war spares no one.
At 6:00 AM, when the sirens finally slowed, I stepped out to see the first light of sunrise, but the background was still filled with distant explosions. With no time to rest, I returned to my hotel, packed my bags, and prepared for my next journey — to Kharkiv, a frontline city that has faced some of the heaviest attacks.
On my way, I made a stop at Arsenalna Metro Station, the deepest underground metro station in the world, buried at a depth of 105.5 meters (346 feet) below the surface. Built during the Soviet era, its depth makes it not just a functioning transit hub but also a massive air raid shelter protecting thousands.
Hours later, I arrived in Kharkiv at 11:00 PM. The entire city was in total blackout — streetlights off, windows covered, silence interrupted only by distant blasts. It was clear that another drone attack had just begun.
This was not just another chapter in my travels — it was a night where I experienced firsthand the resilience, fear, and strength of the people of Ukraine.
