Who Mulla Kamal Khan was

Full name: Mulla Kamal Khan (often called Mulla Kamalan Hoot, Kamalan, etc.).

He was a folklore vocalist specialised in shehr (a genre of long narrative singing or poetic storytelling) in Balochi tradition.


He could narrate epic, historical, love, and mythic poems — quite long ones — and often accompanied by traditional instruments like chung (a kind of stringed instrument) and suroze (a violin-like instrument).


He had a very sharp memory: he memorised many long ballads and historical narrations. Some of his performances lasted many hours, sometimes for many nights, with many songs each night.

Scholarship, repertoire & creativity

Though he had little or no formal schooling, he was seen as a scholar/historian among his people, because of his ability to recall historical, tribal, epic, and other lore and preserve them in his songs.

He collected large amounts of folk poems, epics, love stories, myths, and preserved them in his own performances and/or documented collections (for example, a book called Miras).

Style

His singing was deeply rooted in Balochi folk/traditional forms; he used local styles and instruments, and his themes often included tribal history, battles, love legends, heroic tales.
People say his voice was “sweet yet powerful,” capable of stirring emotion.
Popularity and influence

Mulla Kamalan was very highly regarded among the Baloch people (in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc.), and even beyond among expatriate Baloch communities and non-Balochis.

After his death there have been large memorials in his honour, attended by many Baloch from different countries.

He was awarded the “Pride of Performance” by the Iranian government (during Khatami’s presidency) for his work.

His narrated ballads (shehrs) are considered archives of Baloch history, folklore, epic myths, love stories, etc. They play a role in preserving culture, identity, stories of the past for Baloch people.

People praise not just his voice but also his memory, intellectual capacity, his ability to represent history in songs. Many consider him not just a singer but almost like a historian or cultural repository.
