Brighton and Hove Albion smashed Oxford United 6-0 at the Kassam Stadium in the Carabao Cup Second Round 2025. Head coach Fabian Hurzeler made eleven changes from the Premier League defeat to Everton, but Albion’s rotated team showed incredible depth, with debut goals, long-awaited returns from injury, and standout performances from new signings.
The night began with Olivier Boscagli, the French defender signed on a free from PSV Eindhoven, scoring on his debut. His deflected strike came after dazzling footwork from Brajan Gruda, the German winger signed from Mainz last summer, who soon added a goal of his own with a thunderous finish into the top corner. Gruda was outstanding all evening, constantly dribbling past Oxford defenders, setting the tempo, and proving why Brighton fans are so excited about his arrival.
In midfield, Diego Gómez, the Uruguayan midfielder signed from Inter Miami, made it 3-0 with his first goal for the Seagulls, prodding home after Diego Coppola won a header from a set-piece. That set the stage for the biggest storyline of the night - the long-awaited debuts of Stefanos Tzimas, Tommy Watson, and Charalampos Kostoulas.
Brighton fans have been waiting months to see all three after frustrating injury setbacks. Stefanos Tzimas, the teenage Greek striker signed from PAOK, finally pulled on an Albion shirt and delivered instantly. Within ten minutes of coming on, he scored twice - first racing onto a through ball from first-team full debutant Harry Howell to slot home, then curling in a composed finish into the bottom corner. With Brighton’s striker debate dominating after the loss to Everton, Tzimas’s clinical debut brace will excite fans and coaching staff alike.
Tommy Watson, who signed from Sunderland at the start of the summer window, also made his long-awaited debut after recovering from injury. He sealed the win in style, cutting inside and curling a stunning strike into the top corner for Albion’s sixth goal.
There was also a proud debut for Charalampos Kostoulas, the 18-year-old Greek foward signed from Olympiacos, who finally got minutes in attack after missing pre-season through injury.
Six goals, three debut scorers, and long-awaited first appearances. A dream night in the Carabao Cup 2025 for Brighton and Hove Albion supporters.
