Scott Slapin's viola playing has received critical acclaim in Fanfare, Strad, Musical Opinion, Mundo Clásico, and the American Record Guide, and his recital compositions have been performed by hundreds of violists internationally. His music for strings can be heard on The Slapin Anthology, which draws from nine albums of Scott's compositions recorded by the American Viola Quartet, the Wistaria String Quartet, the Penn State Viola Ensemble, and by the award-winning Slapin-Solomon Viola Duo, in which Scott and his wife Tanya Solomon performed for more than twenty years.
Scott was born in 1974 into a family of musicians. He studied violin/viola with Barbara Barstow and Emanuel Vardi, took composition lessons with Richard Lane, and at eighteen was one of the youngest graduates of the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He performed much of the traditional recital repertoire with pianist Betty Rosenblum and premiered solo works by contemporary composers in Carnegie's Weill Hall, at international viola congresses, and on many albums. Scott is the first person to have recorded the entire set of J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas on viola, and his Paganini 24 Caprices album (transposed, but unarranged) was the second complete recording of those works on a viola in standard tuning. He has performed both cycles (from memory) along with Bach's Six Suites, the complete unaccompanied viola works of Hindemith and Reger, and his own compositions for solo viola. Scott has given countless recitals and can be heard playing some of his own music, solo Bach, and Paganini on various soundtracks for film and TV.
Scott has been commissioned by the Primrose International Viola Competition and by the American Viola Society, where he was a 2020 artist in residence. A former fellow at the Montalvo Arts Center in California, he served as a committee member, judge, and performer for the inaugural Maurice Gardner Composition Competition. Scott was the on-stage, solo violist for the Off-Broadway production of Orpheus In Love, a chamber opera about a viola-playing Orpheus, and he saw much of the Western Hemisphere playing in symphony orchestras from Cincinnati to São Paulo. Scott and Tanya taught at various colleges and academies in the Northeast and currently teach violin and viola worldwide via Skype from their home teaching studio north of Burlington, Vermont. For more than one-hundred string-related videos, visit their YouTube channel. Scott has been playing instruments by Hiroshi Iizuka since 1986.
Scott's compositions include thirty viola duos; more than a dozen unaccompanied character pieces; chamber music; music for viola choir; concertos; a mass "for the dead violist"; and a two-viola, one-act opera about Cremonus, God of the Viola.
