White faced hornets (bald faced hornets) are technically not hornets, they are wasps...specifically a type of yellowjacket. And me and yellowjackets do not get along. I have been stung over a dozen times, usually in the August. So when I saw this nest just above my fire pit, I knew that I could not enjoy any late summer fires without fear of those painful searing stings, the swollen limbs, and the seemingly endless itching. All documented in this video - Yellowjacket Wasp Sting, the First 70 Hours: • YELLOW JACKET WASP STING: The first 70 hours

The removal took 2 days to perform. I am not the best drone pilot but the fact that my drone was not calibrated did not help at all. You can see this by how it doesn't hover without drifting in the first half of the video. Additionally, there were tree branches everywhere (these eventually got chewed up by the drone too.) I calibrated and cleaned up the drone for the second half but it didn't stay calibrated or clean for very long after that.
Perspective was a problem in removing the nest. I was what seemed like 6 feet below the nest and 15 feet away so I could not gauge the height of the drone in relationship to the nest. Ideally, one swipe at the top of the nest where it is connected to the branch should have done the trick but I couldn't get in there because of the branches and it was hard to see if I was in the right place or not. I guess that made for a more interesting video.
I wouldn't recommend anyone using this method to remove a wasp nest. I had several near crashes (and one crash where I had to creep underneath the nest and retrieve the drone...was scared for my life) and my drone ended up caked with larva, wasp guts, and nest paper. The upside is that you don't have to personally get near the nest. I did not get stung at all doing this.
