🎬 911 Season 9 Premiere Recap

Greetings from Movie Matrixx again. We're dissecting 911's S09E01, Reward for Sacrifice, today. Let's get started. To begin with, the FBI snatches away a sting operation that Athena Grant has been working on nonstop. To make matters worse, Athena is forced to skip Bobby's plaque dedication ceremony at the firehouse due to the time of the sting. (The FBI couldn't have contacted her in advance? Please assist a widow! Home is where Athena's problems begin, as she is surprised to learn that Harry has left high school and is now working at a coffee shop. As any mother bear would be, she is incensed, but Harry and May essentially tell her that she is solely responsible for her own ignorance. Harry said Athena, "You haven't been our mother since Bobby died," suggesting that she has been somewhat checked out in the months since her husband's tragic death. Aww. Athena, who already feels as though life is slipping away from her, is further unsettled by a welfare check that comes too close to home. It feels like a warning story about the woman in question, who is thought to be dead until she unexpectedly wakes up. This woman, by all accounts, had a full life before she and her husband had a stillbirth, which led to a depression from which she and her life never fully recovered. Is this what Athena's own future holds? Reminding Athena that she is surrounded by loving people, Hen advises her not to go too quickly.

The team's rescue of hot-shot billionaire Tripp Houser from a humpback whale's mouth earlier in the premiere has quickly risen to the top of our list of reasons never to go kayaking. In any case, Chimney's quick thinking, Eddie's amazing diving technique, and Hen's CPR abilities finish the job, and a thankful Tripp gives the LAPD a substantial donation—but with a catch. Hen has to accompany a guest of her choosing to Tripp's next space launch in order for the department to obtain his evil billionaire money. Hen's first choice is undoubtedly Karen, the Wilson family's literal rocket scientist, but her wife finds it impossible to balance her own serious scientific job with Tripp's incredibly careless demeanor. Athena assures Hen that she will seize the next chance that presents itself.
The guys are nearly going out of their way to secure that second seat, so it's not like Hen doesn't have a lot of other willing players to pick from. For the event, Eddie even sports an absurd alien outfit! Unfortunately, Athena is currently experiencing the most intense emotional journey, and in the 9-1-1 universe, such journeys can occasionally take one to outer space.
