Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes issues ranging from joint pain and rashes to organ inflammation. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, 9 out of 10 people living with lupus are female, and it’s 2 to 3 times more common in African American women than Caucasian women.
When she was just 17 years old, Salathiel had to be rushed to the ER because her feet had swollen to the point where she couldn’t walk. Soon after, she was diagnosed with lupus, and she had to rely on her family to help nurse her back to health.
Now 39, Salathiel found a new purpose in life by educating and helping others with lupus, especially in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia. She opens up to Medical Stories about her near-death experience with the disease as well as how she’s using her story to inspire others facing the same challenges.
This episode also features in-depth commentary from renowned expert Angela R. Crowley, MD, Rheumatology Specialist, Hinsdale Orthopaedics, a Division of Illinois Bone & Joint Institute.
