Hauwa Ibrahim, a Nigerian human rights and Sharia law attorney, in conversation with Dr. Chipo Dendere, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies. Ms. Ibrahim has an incredible story, from defending women and children in Sharia law cases in northern Nigeria, to her human rights work including the case of Boko Haram. Throughout her work she has seen the power of mothers in peacebuilding and steering their children away from extremism. Ms. Ibrahim will discuss the role mothers’ soft power plays in building peace and slowing down radicalization and the flow of extremist ideologies around the world. She is currently researching and working on “Mothers Without Borders: The Phenomenology of Mothers’ Soft Power in Building Peace” with groups of women across dozens of countries in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa, while building bridges of cooperation between mothers in different regions and developing collaborations between religious and non-religious communities where extremism has become an issue.
