This video was taken during a Level 2 Animal Assisted Play Therapy workshop. It was an unrehearsed role-play of one way to intervene using AAPT with a child who is withdrawn, disengaged, and/or anxious. A workshop participant plays the child, and the dog was there with another of the participants. Video shot by Kit Fuller; used with permission.
This is an example of a directive AAPT intervention that is quite structured. The key here was to create a playful climate and activity to help the child feel emotionally safe and confident to become more fully engaged, and for the dog to participate voluntarily. There are many other ways of working in AAPT, with varying degrees of structure and processing, instruction and reflection. This provides just one small sample, especially since actual client videos cannot be shown publicly (privacy reasons).
