One Direction is an English-Irish pop group who are currently based in London. They signed up with music producer Simon Cowell and his record label Syco Records after they finished third in the 2010 British X Factor series.

To date, the band are said to have sold over 30 million recordings. They have received two BRIT Awards as well as three MTV Music Awards, and were proclaimed by Billboard, to be 2012's "Top New Artist".

Success wasn't always the case for One Direction. In 2010, the band members auditioned individually for X Factor but none of them managed to impress the judging panel. However, Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge on X Factor, suggested that they team-up together and enter the "Groups" category instead.

In the qualifying rounds, the newly-formed group, consisting of Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik, sang the song "Torn" in an acoustic fashion. Nevertheless, although they progressed to the final, they finished third, and their song -- "Forever Young" was not released.

The song however was "leaked" onto the internet where it became very successful, after which, Cowell reportedly signed them up on a UK £2 million record deal.

In February 2011, a book about the band was published by HarperCollins, entitled One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story). The book subsequently topped The Sunday Times Best Seller's list.

One Direction's debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful", was released in September 2011. The single quickly reached number one in the UK Singles Chart, after it became the most pre-ordered Sony Music Entertainment single in history.

Subsequently, "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing" were released, both reaching the UK top ten in the Singles Chart.

In November 2011, the band signed a record deal with Columbia Records in the United States, after which, "What Makes You Beautiful" was released in February 2012 in the US. The song reached number 28 on the Billboard Top 100, which makes it the highest debut single for a British act since 1998.

In early 2012, One Direction released their first studio album entitled Up All Night. It became the fastest selling album for the year of 2011 and managed to top the charts in sixteen different countries.

Furthermore, the album topped the US Billboard 200, which made One Direction the first British band to top the chart with their debut album in North America. The album was the first boy band album to sell over half a million digital copies in the US, and by August 2012, it had sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

The band went on to further success with a recording from a concert of the tour Up All Night: The Live Tour, in May 2012, and a second album, Take Me Home, which was released in November of 2012. In February 2013, they then released a cover version of "One Way Or Another" as a Comic Relief single.
