This was probably the first time I’ve ever regretted getting off my boat to walk a line out to a stuck boat. The water temp was high 60s, and even though it wasn’t a really warm day, I figured with the sun out it wouldn’t be too bad. Boy was I wrong. I must’ve hit a sandbar between myself and the boat I was going to go get, because even though I started out in knee depth water (typical), I quickly started getting into deeper water that eventually went all the way up to my waist (not typical) before going back down to knee level by the customer’s boat.

You ever have one of those moments where you step off your boat and instantly think, “Yeah, this was dumb”?
Yeah. That was me.
This was supposed to be a quick, easy job. Just walk a line out to a customer’s stuck boat, hook it up, and call it a day. The water was in the high 60s, the sun was shining, and I figured, “It’s knee-deep water—I’ve done this a hundred times. No big deal.”
Spoiler alert: BIG DEAL.
I must’ve found the one random trench in the entire area, because before I knew it, I went from casually wading to full-on regretting every life decision that led me to this moment. One minute I’m knee-deep, next minute I’m waist-deep, cold, wet, and trying not to look like I’m swimming to my customer’s boat. I kept waiting for Morgan Freeman’s voiceover to kick in: “It was at this moment… he knew.”
Eventually the water shallowed out again (thanks, nature), but not before I looked like a half-drowned seal dragging a tow line through a saltwater slip-n-slide.
Moral of the story? Always test the depth. Or better yet—just throw the line like a normal person.
