In this example, two concentric steel pipes filled with high explosives will be examined. The pipes are made of fully elastic-plastic steel, and the explosive material is modeled using the Jones-Wilkins-Lee equation of state. The explosive will detonate at four points around the cylinder's circumference. Due to the symmetry of the problem, only one-eighth of the system will be modeled. Symmetry boundary conditions are applied on the symmetry planes, and a hard contact condition is used between the surfaces of the pipes and the explosive material. Typically, in the physical applications of shock waves, the following units are used: time in microseconds, length in centimeters, mass in grams, and pressure in megabars.
The analysis intended is a non-linear dynamic analysis of the dynamic explicit type, performed in two separate steps to reduce the volume of the output written to the database file. The first stage lasts 6 microseconds, and the second stage lasts 1.5 microseconds. In the first stage, deformations are not very significant, but they become important in the second stage.
