Korean Patchwork Jogakbo 조각보 Sewing Tutorial: Using Ssamsol 쌈솔 Seaming Technique for Pojagi 보자기
In this video, I show you two ways to sew jogakbo patchwork, using the ssamsol seaming technique. The first way is by machine, which is the fastest. The second way is by hand stitching which is slower, but results in a beautiful bespoke finish. I've included chapters below, so you can skip to the one you want to do, and each step is easily referenced. Happy sewing!
Jogakbo 조각보 is a traditional Korean patchwork technique, that is a creative process that embraces the principles of slow fashion, emphasizing mindfulness, craftsmanship, and less waste - before these terms were even a thing!. Save your scraps and use them to create a stunning piece of textile art.
Ssamsol 쌈솔 is a durable decorative stitch, using 2 different seam allowances and two rows of stitches, resulting in a reversible seam that is finished on both sides. Because of this, this stitch technique looks stunning on curtains, decorative cloths, clothing, tote bags, etc. The possibilities are truly endless!
*It was called to my attention (via comments) that this way of interlocking the seam allowances and 2 rows of stitching is also called a ‘Flat Felled Seam’ - common in denim garments. I wish I metioned this in the video and can’t believe I missed it, considering I take apart denim often and deal with this kind of seam often. So I’m including this here in the descriptions :)
Pojagi 보자기 is a traditional Korean multi-functional wrapping cloth, that is often made using the jogakbo and ssamsol techniques. It was used for various purposes such as wrapping and carrying possessions, tablecloths, covering objects and precious things, gift wrapping, and even enclosing marriage proposals.
