The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes Review

The Dark Pictures Anthology is back with another tale of terror. Whilst there are a few problems and imperfections, this is the closest Supermassive Games have come to recreating the horror of Until Dawn.

Star Review:

Gameplay – 3 stars
Controls are as we have come to expect although I mourn the loss of the fix point camera. There were also far few QTEs for my liking, but the ones we had were pretty good.

Graphics – 3.5 stars
Again, nothing new on previous games here. The graphics kept having to update as they went and I had loading screens in the middle of scenes which were presumably because the PS4 couldn't keep up.

Immersion – 3.5 stars
If not for the incessant loading screens, this was a game that was very easy to get lost in. Some great jump scares and decisions to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Fun Factor – 4 stars
I like the inclusion of a difficulty setting so that everyone can enjoy at their own pace or ability. The exploration side of the game was also enjoyable, learning about the people who were here before you.

Story – 4.5 stars
There was just the right amount of historical blending here, with interesting stories from the past. Whilst I wasn't a fan of the big reveal, it was still succinct and there was much better characterisation here than previous games.
