The Sixteen‑Cylinder Beast Nobody Believed Was Real!
In the late 1980s, a small group of passionate engineers and designers in Modena, Italy set out to build something no one had dared to attempt before—a road-going car powered by a transverse-mounted V-16 engine. The result was the Cizeta V16T, one of the wildest supercars of the 1990s, created by former Lamborghini engineer Claudio Zampolli and styled by legendary designer Marcello Gandini. With help from music producer Giorgio Moroder in the early stages, this ambitious project aimed to take on Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti with something completely unique.
The Cizeta V16T featured a 6.0-liter V-16 engine producing 540 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Unlike any other supercar of its time, the engine sat sideways in the middle of the car, forming a "T" layout with the gearbox. It had a steel space frame chassis, aluminum body panels, and double-wishbone suspension. It could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds and had a top speed of over 200 miles per hour, putting it right in line with the top performance cars of its time. But despite its power and design, the V16T faced major challenges.
With no dealership network, limited production resources, and rising costs, Cizeta struggled to stay afloat. Only nine customer coupes were ever built between 1991 and 1995, along with one prototype and a single Spyder version made later in 2003. Zampolli moved to California, where he continued maintaining and restoring the rare cars until his passing in 2021. The original prototype, once co-branded with Moroder's name, was sold for over $1.3 million in 2022, proving that this forgotten supercar still holds value to collectors today.
