Unlike the prank-focused December 28th in most of Ecuador, Cuenca's unique tradition features an epic masquerade parade (mascaradas) along Avenida Huayna Cápac, with colorful costumes, creative comparsas, hilarious political and social satire, dancing, and recreations of the year's biggest moments.
This video captures the festive energy, incredible disguises, street performances, and why this is one of Cuenca's most beloved events – a perfect blend of humor, culture, and community in the "Athens of Ecuador."
