THE WW1 OFFICER WHO WON TWO V.C`s AND A MILITARY CROSS FOR OUTSTANDING HEROISM

Captain Noel Chavasse was a pacifist and a religious man. However, as was typical of the period, he also believed in his duty to serve his country.
He was born on November 9, 1884, and was an extraordinary individual who left an indelible mark during the First World War. Let me share his remarkable story:
Background and Early Life:
Noel Chavasse hailed from the distinguished Chavasse family. His father, Rev. Francis Chavasse, later became the Bishop of Liverpool and founded St Peter’s College, Oxford.
Despite his fragile start due to illness, he and his twin brother Christopher grew up excelling in sports and academics.
The family later moved to Liverpool, where Noel and Christopher attended Liverpool College.
Noel Chavasse was a medical doctor who answered the call of King and Country in 1914.
Although he served as an officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps, he was attached to the Liverpool Scottish Battalion.
His unwavering dedication to caring for the men in his unit set him apart.
Acts of Heroism:
During the Battle of Guillemont, Chavasse displayed immense courage. He ventured as close as 25 yards to the German line, rescuing three men while under constant sniper fire and bombing.
In August 1917, during the early stages of the offensive at Passchendaele, he performed similar heroics, earning him a second Victoria Cross (VC).
Remarkably, Chavasse is one of only three people to receive the VC twice, alongside Arthur Martin-Leake and Charles Upham.
Legacy and Sacrifice:
Tragically, Captain Noel Chavasse succumbed to wounds suffered at Passchendaele in 1917.
His legacy endures as the most highly decorated First World War British officer.
His selflessness, bravery, and unwavering commitment to saving lives remains as an inspiration to this day.
A truly unique and incredibly brave human being who won Britain`s highest decorations for heroism without ever firing a single shot.
