Stella Imber by Glenda Lee Sutardy : http://glendasutardy.wix.com/stellaimber
STELLA IMBER is an ongoing theme of the interconnectedness of the cosmos and ourselves as sentient human beings. The series of star and comet paintings employs a mix of media, including, polymers, Nihonga pigments, oils, waxes, and stitching, and draws upon Sutardy’s fascination with the cosmos and our place within it. A starwatcher and dreamer of stars since early childhood, Sutardy bases this body of work around one special childhood memory of her father waking her in the early hours of the morning to view and wonder about Comet Bennett, a celestial visitor that passes through our part of the universe every 1,770 years.“The impact of seeing that comet has continued to reverberate throughout my life. It was as if it were a living being. I was part of it, and it was a part of me and everything else.”
Looking up at the sky in Bandung we rarely see the bright and clean vistas of the Southern skies. Glenda has created her own imaginative realm based on her dreams and experiences of the Cosmos.
Bennett Comet was first observed by John Caister Bennett on December 28, 1969. ‘Beginning the last week of October, an extraordinary, brilliant, dense tail was seen in the southeastern sky at dawn. The comet’s head, then situated in Corvus, of second magnitude. Comet moved toward the southwest, crossing Crater and Hydra, its slightly curved tail growing rapidly to 25 degrees in length by the opening of November. The head was by then of fourth magnitude. Maximum tail length reached in late November at 35 degrees.’ http://www.icq.eps.harvard.edu/bortle...
