〇Unique Aspects of Deaf Sports
The competitions are conducted in accordance with the same international rules as those for hearing athletes.
The key difference lies in how the start signal is given to the athletes.
In track events where every millisecond counts (competing for 1/1000th of a second), it is crucial to begin movement precisely with the start sound, but Deaf athletes cannot hear this signal.
Previously, athletes had to rely on visually watching the starter or nearby competitors to initiate their start.
Especially in short-distance events requiring a crouch start, athletes were forced to look up to see the start signal, putting them at a disadvantageous posture.
To provide visual information assurance, the "Start Lamp" was developed.
This device signals the start sound with light and is linked to the starter's gun.
The color changes inform the athletes of the commands: Red for "On Your Marks," Yellow for "Set," and Green for the starting signal (the gun).
By positioning the Start Lamp in the athletes' line of sight, they can now start under the same conditions as hearing athletes.
