“Why Return? They Want You Dead… and Lazarus Is Dead already.”

John 11 is one of the most powerful and emotional chapters in the entire Gospel. It tells the story of Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus who becomes sick and dies. Though Jesus receives word early, He delays His arrival—showing that God’s timing, not ours, reveals His glory. When Jesus finally reaches Bethany, He meets a grieving Martha and Mary, both heartbroken and surrounded by mourners.
In this chapter we see Jesus’ humanity and His divinity side by side:
He weeps with those who are hurting, yet He also commands life itself. Jesus stands before the sealed tomb of Lazarus, prays to the Father, and calls the dead man out—and Lazarus emerges, alive again, still wrapped in grave clothes.
This miracle becomes a turning point. Many believe, yet others run to the Pharisees, leading the religious leaders to intensify their plans to kill Jesus.
John 11 reveals Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life, the One whose voice reaches even into death—and the One whose compassion reaches into every hurting heart.
