A chartered flight carrying 71 Chinese nationals from Juba, capital city of South Sudan arrived in Khartoum, capital of Sudan Wednesday afternoon.
The crowd was greeted by Wang Yi, Charge d’Affaires of Chinese Embassy in Sudan.
The first group of Chinese, retreating from Juba to Khartoum after the recent conflict in South Sudan, are mostly workers from the Juba Airport Project of China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd.
Nearly all commercial airlines were closed at the Juba Airport after the outbreak of the conflicts, except for a few cargo, chartered and military airplanes.
The chartered flight, belonging to Golden Wing Airline of South Sudan, departed Wednesday morning from Nairobi, capital of Kenya, to pick up the passengers.
"After the situation got worse in South Sudan, we followed the situation closely under the instruction from home; started our emergency system, and cooperated with Sudanese government, so as to provide convenience to our people to retreat. Sudanese government gave us a lot of help in retreating, and the first flight retreating to Khartoum has arrived safe and sound," said Wang Yi, Charge d’Affaires of Chinese Embassy in Sudan.
More Chinese companies and institutions are going to leave South Sudan, and a few more flights will pass through Khartoum before heading back to China, Wang added.
Chinese Embassy to Sudan set up nine temporary points for Chinese to gather before they left Juba.
Zhang Lizhong, project manager of the Juba Airport Project, recalled the conflict.
"The conflict broke out all of a sudden. The conflict site was near our camp. I reported to the Embassy and our Eastern African Center immediately. I then led our people to our shelter. We always have an emergency plan, and we started it immediately. I gathered all our people to that container, which is covered with steel plates and sand bags that are used to prevent hand grenades," said Zhang.
Zhang said, the site where the conflict started was less than 500 meters away from the camp, and they could clearly hear gun shots.
