Eiichi Shibusawa was a great leader like them.
He brought hope and economic growth to Japan.

When Japan was starting to connect with the world,
Shibusawa believed that success shouldn’t be just for one person.
He wanted a society where everyone could work hard and grow together.

He helped build many things that are still important in Japan today,
like banks, railways, schools, and hospitals.

Because of his amazing work,
he was chosen to be on Japan’s new 10,000 yen bill starting in 2024.

【Synopsis】


Eiichi Shibusawa, the man featured on Japan’s new 10,000-yen banknote,
is known as the "Father of Japanese Capitalism."

He founded Japan’s first bank and helped establish over 500 companies,
including Tokyo Gas, Tokio Marine Insurance, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange —
across many different industries.

He was born into a wealthy farming family at a time when samurai still lived in Japan.
By the age of six, he had already read the Analects of Confucius.

Raised by an education-minded father and a kind, caring mother,
Shibusawa grew up with strong values.

At 23, he began working for the Tokugawa shogunate,
and at 27, he traveled to the World Expo in Paris
as an attendant to the shogun’s younger brother.

During that journey, he visited Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and other countries.
He was deeply impressed by advanced industries,
free economic systems, modern cities,
and open discussions across social classes.

After the Meiji era began,
Shibusawa briefly served in government,
then turned his energy to building Japan’s economy through business.

He had no interest in becoming rich by himself.
“Work together, prosper together” — that was his belief.

He devoted his life to creating a society
where those who worked hard could truly be rewarded.

【あらすじ】

新一万円札の顔となる渋沢栄一は「日本資本主義の父」と呼ばれており、
日本初の銀行を立ち上げ、東京ガスや東京海上日動、東京証券取引所など、
さまざまな業種の会社を５００以上も設立した人物です。


まだ、日本に侍がいた時代に豪農の子として生まれ、６歳にして論語を読破。
教育熱心な父と思いやりにあふれた母の愛に育まれ成長します。
２３歳で徳川家に奉公し、２７歳で将軍の弟のお供としてパリ万国博覧会へ。
スイス、オランダ、ベルギーなどを訪れ、
進んだ工業技術、自由な経済活動、近代的な街並み、身分を超えて議論できる風土などに衝撃を受けます。

明治時代になり、栄一は大臣を経験後、日本の商業を発展させようと多方面で大活躍しました。
栄一は「自分だけが儲けよう」という気持ちはさらさらなく、
「皆で頑張って、皆でもうける」
「仕事をがんばった人がちゃんと報われる仕組み」を大切にした人物です。
