You didn't know this homeless man, but you will have paid for his funeral.
Last year alone, Massachusetts spent over 4.5 million taxpayer dollars to reimburse funeral directors who provide funeral services for over 4,000 indigent families according to the Department of Transitional Assistance. More often than not, the families have no money or the person died completely alone, and directors absorb the loss.
The state will repay directors up to $1,100 so long as the total costs of both funeral and cemetery expenses don't exceed $3,500. Since 1998, state representative Ben Swan has been pushing to raise that maximum up to $2,000 so long as total costs don't exceed $3,000. But the proposed bill is met with resistance from funeral homes, as the bill suggests a laundry list of to do items that they must do on their expense.
