It's too bad this staggeringly gorgeous film from a reclusive auteur was released the same year as the undoubtedly wrenching, more accessible Saving Private Ryan. Its images of torturous war at the doorstep of a Pacific eden and especially its score, before there was practically an expectation that Hans Zimmer's name would be attached to such a project.
