How you pack your backpack can make a big difference in your comfort on the trail and help you access your gear quickly and easily.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
1. Bottom Section: Pack heavier, bulkier items like your tent and sleeping bag here. These items won’t be needed during your hike, and placing them at the bottom helps reduce strain on your lower back.
2. Middle Section: Store items like your cooking stove, food, and clothes in the middle. Some hikers find that placing heavier items in this section helps with weight balance and back comfort—feel free to experiment with what works best for you.
3. Top Section: Keep lightweight and frequently used items, such as your rain jacket, snacks, pillow, and first aid kit, at the top. This way, you can easily grab what you need without digging through your entire pack.
I’ll also share tips on what to pack in the external pockets, including essentials like your water bottle, knife, extra shoes, and water filtration system. If you’re carrying a closed-cell foam sleeping pad, I’ll show you how to attach it externally for easy access during breaks.
