Meet Lana, who is 19 and from Boston in the United States. Lana was part of GVI’s Marine Conservation program on the island of Caqalai, Fiji.
Lana found out about GVI through gap year research she completed online. Before coming to Caqalai, Lana took part in another one of our programs, GVI’s Elephant Conservation program in Chiang Mai, Thailand. After completing this program, she made the decision to join another GVI program, this time on a tropical island, instead of the jungles of Thailand.
Since arriving in Fiji, some of Lana’s highlights have included getting to know the locals, staff and fellow participants, all of whom share the same passion. Activities she has participated in included beach cleans, underwater debris dives, snorkeling and learning to do an array of marine surveys.
Lana believes she has learnt a lot since getting involved with GVI. It has opened her eyes to the big and small things she can do everyday to help the environment. Further these activities all help to contribute the UN Sustainable Development Goal of life under water. When Lana arrives home, she will share with others what she has learnt.
