The 1st of April 2015 sees the end of an era as the responsibility for UK SAR helicopter operations moves from the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy to Bristow Helicopters.
As part of the transition and workup of the new fleet of helicopters the crews are spending time conducting familiarisation training with those agencies who routinely have call on their services.
Thursday the 22nd of January saw 30 team members from Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team and Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team meet at Cleveland’s base, in the shadow of Rosebury Topping, for such training.
We spent a number of hours in an around the helicopter to understand safety aspects, internal layout of the helicopter, flight and winching capability followed by practical sessions with the winch and high lines.
Will we be sad to say farewell to the military crews and Sea Kings but are looking forward to working with equally knowledgeable and professional crews and with an immensely capable aircraft.
