Medium Voltage cable termination kit
A medium voltage (MV) cable termination kit provides the necessary components to connect the end of an MV power cable (typically 2 kV to 36 kV) to equipment like transformers, switchgear, or overhead lines. These kits are essential for ensuring a safe, reliable, insulated, and environmentally sealed connection, managing electrical stress at the cable end.
Types of MV Cable Termination Kits
The primary types of termination kits available are defined by their installation technology:
Cold Shrink Terminations: These kits feature a pre-stretched rubber or silicone sleeve over a removable plastic core. During installation, the sleeve is slid into position over the prepared cable end, and the core is unwound and removed. The material then shrinks to form a constant inward pressure and seal, requiring no heat or flames, making them safer for use in hazardous areas.
Heat Shrink Terminations: These kits use tubes made of cross-linked polyolefin or similar materials that shrink when heat is applied with a torch. The heat causes the material to conform tightly to the cable's shape, creating a protective seal. These are a reliable, established technology suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Separable Connectors: Also known as "elbow" connectors, these are pre-molded components used to terminate cables into specific bushings on switchgear and transformers, such as inner-cone or outer-cone types. They provide a fully screened, compact connection and are designed for high reliability and safety within enclosed equipment.
Key Components
A standard MV termination kit typically includes:
Stress control material: A high-dielectric constant (Hi-K) tube or mastic compound is used to control and distribute the electrical field stress at the end of the cable's outer insulation layer, preventing electrical failure.
Insulation tubing/sleeves: Anti-tracking and insulating tubes (often silicone or polyolefin) provide the main electrical insulation and protection from the environment.
Sealing mastics/adhesives: Special tapes or compounds (like red mastic) are included to fill voids, prevent moisture ingress, and provide a secure seal at various transitions.
Earthing/Grounding components: Items like copper tape, tinned copper braids, or spring clamps are used to connect the cable's metallic screen (wire or tape) to the earth system.
Cable lugs (optional): Some kits may or may not include the mechanical or compression lugs used to connect the conductor to the equipment terminal.
Cleaning/Preparation materials: Aloxite emery cloth or cleaning wipes are often included for preparing the cable's insulation surface before installation.
Major Manufacturers
Leading manufacturers of medium voltage cable termination kits include 3M, Nexans, ABB (Elastimold), TE Connectivity (Raychem), and NKT. These products adhere to international standards such as IEC 60502-2, IEC 60684-2, and Saudi Aramco specifications like SAES-P-104.
Knowing the specific cable construction (e.g., single or three-core, shielded type, insulation diameter) and application (indoor or outdoor, system voltage) is crucial for selecting the correct kit
