【福井／越前国一宮】気比神宮／古代より続く北陸道の総鎮守 - Kehi Jingu Shrine in FUKUI, JAPAN / One of the oldest shrines

氣比神宮は、福井県敦賀市にある越前国一宮。
古来より敦賀は天然の良港を有し、北陸から畿内への玄関口にあたる要衝でした。
この立地から、「北陸道総鎮守」として氣比神宮は朝廷から重視されてきました。
社伝によれば、仲哀天皇8年（199年）に神功皇后と武内宿禰が安曇連に命じて気比神を祀らせたと伝わります。
これが氣比神宮の創建と云われています。
文武天皇の大宝２年（702年）勅命により、仲哀天皇、神功皇后を合祀し本宮とし、日本武尊・応神天皇・玉妃命・武内宿禰命が合祀され「四社之宮」と称しました。
明治28年、神宮号宣下により氣比神宮と改称して今日に至っています。
国宝本殿を含む社殿の多くが米軍の空襲で焼失し、現在の主要社殿は戦後に再建されたものです。
空襲を免れた大鳥居は、春日大社（奈良県）・厳島神社（広島県）と並んで日本三大木造大鳥居の一つに数えられ、国の重要文化財に指定されています。
また、「敦賀」の地名は、境内社の角鹿（つぬが）神社に由来すると伝わっています。
地元では「けいさん」の愛称で親しまれる氣比神宮は、日本三大松原の一つ「気比の松原」とともに、敦賀を代表する観光名所となっています。

Kehi Jingu Shrine is the first shrine of Echizen Province, located in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture.
Since ancient times, Tsuruga has had a good natural harbor and was an important gateway from the Hokuriku region to the Kinai region.
Due to this location, Kehi Jingu Shrine has been valued by the Imperial Court as the ''general guardian deity of the Hokuriku Road''.
According to the shrine legend, in 199, Empress Jingu and Takeuchi no Shukune ordered Azumitsura to enshrine the God of Kehi.
In 702, Emperor Chuai and Empress Jingu were enshrined together as the main shrine, and Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, Emperor Ojin, Gyokuhi no Mikoto, and Takenouchi no Sukune no Mikoto were enshrined together and called 'Shisha no Miya'.
In the 2nd year of Emperor Monmu's reign (702), Emperor Nakai and Empress Jingu were enshrined together as the main shrine by imperial order, and Nippon Muson, Emperor Ojin, Tamaki no Mikoto, and Takeuchi no Shukune Mikoto were enshrined together and called "Shikashinomiya".
In 1895, the shrine was renamed Kehi Jingu Shrine under imperial proclamation, which it retains to this day.
Many of the shrine buildings, including the national treasure main shrine, were destroyed by US air raids, and the current main shrine buildings were rebuilt after the war.
The Otorii, which survived the air raid, is one of the three largest wooden Otorii gates in Japan and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
In addition, it is said that the place name 'Tsuruga' comes from the Tsunuga Shrine in the precincts of the shrine.
Kehi Jingu Shrine, affectionately known as "Kei-san" by locals, is a tourist attraction that represents Tsuruga along with "Kehi no Matsubara", one of Japan's three major pine groves.
