After decades of double-digit economic expansion, China is struggling to produce growth at half that rate. This is the result of a property market bust, deflation, flagging consumption, and the collapse of local infrastructure investment.
A debate is raging among economists over the depth of China’s troubles, with some noting enduring strengths. Pessimists, however, say China faces structural changes that will be difficult to overcome, and as a result, China’s economic power has peaked.
