Stung Sreng has the role of receiving water from the water source of the Dangrek mountain range and partly from the local rainwater to irrigate the land to grow crops, mixed crops and use for daily life of the people in Along the river. In the past, the land of Stung Sreng bank has collapsed and eroded many places due to the effects of the monsoon rains that flowed from the Dangrek mountain range and the local rainfall area, which affected the people in Sleng Spean commune, Srey Snom district, Siem Reap province. The Stung Sreng current disturbs the main concrete canal east of the Stung Sreng Irrigation System, Phase 1, a large source of water from the Stung Sreng Reservoir for irrigation in Oddar Meanchey Province and some areas in Siem Reap Province. Stung Sreng Irrigation System Phase 1 is located in Cheung Tien Commune, Chong Kal District, Oddar Meanchey Province. An important role serves the cultivation of crops in both the dry and wet seasons, as well as use for other sectors. The system transports water from the north to the south through two main concrete canals, the eastern main canal and the western main canal, along with a 2,984-meter-long delta dam. The main main canal is 38,059 meters long, bringing water from the upper part and from the reservoir to irrigate 12,000 hectares in Srey Snom and Kralanh districts, Siem Reap province. The western main canal is 42969 meters long and brings water from the upper part and from the reservoir through Chongkal district, Oddar Meanchey province to irrigate 13,000 hectares in Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey province.
Since May 2024, the engineering department of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has started the construction of the Stung Sreng diversion dam to protect the system of the East Main Concrete Canal, which is important for irrigation in Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces. Construction work includes: digging a 450-meter-long artificial canal with a 60-meter-wide upper mouth and a 20-meter-wide bottom to change the flow of water and construct a 100-meter-long dam. So far, the construction work has achieved more than 70%.
After digging the artificial canal to divert the water and build the concrete structure to divert the Stung Sreng River, about 1,490 families in Chong Kal and Cheung Tien communes, Chong Kal district, Oddar Meanchey province and Sleng Spean commune, Srey Snom district, Siem Reap province will receive Water sources have been used for irrigation in addition to agricultural production, and have made significant contributions to tackling climate change, such as droughts and floods. In addition, farmers will be able to increase the growing season of agricultural crops two to three times a year on the same land, resulting in better household income growth, as well as contributing to the development and maintenance of local natural resources.
