This Leica Military Barnack Model II camera was originally issued to a combat correspondent of the Nazi Afrika Korps during World War II. Featuring a black enamel finish, the camera body dates to 1932 and is fitted with a lens manufactured in 1938. Captured as a war trophy by Australian forces (operating under British Commonwealth command) during the North African Campaign, the camera was later repurposed by the Royal Australian Navy Intelligence Bureau (RANIB). During its service transition, the original German military serial number was defaced, and an Australian military inventory code "PATT.8665" was stamped onto the body.
Decommissioned in 1956 after the RANIB upgraded its equipment, the camera remained in archival storage until entering the auction market through Vickers & Haud Auctioneers (Melbourne) in 2020. The current collector acquired it for AUD 11,950.
