Borderlands 2 is a game that brought a bunch of new fans to the series, and is still regarded as the best in the series. That was the case for myself as well. I had tried the first at a friends house but never got that far, and assumed it just wasn’t for me, until Borderlands 2 changed my mind and turned me into a gambling addict constantly farming the same boss because statistically speaking, most Borderlands players stop farming the bunker right before they get a perfect sham. Speaking of shams, I really screwed myself by not playing the first game because while by today's standards it is stiff, a bit ugly, and by all means not what we expect from a Borderlands game, it is still worth the time. After 15 years, it’s important to look back at the game to see if its initial praise from critics was warranted, and if within its flaws, we can find new reasons to appreciate the future games. I mentioned it already in my Borderlands 2 video, but I like this game a lot, even if it is ultimately the one I am least likely to play again.
Since Borderlands was the first entry, it set the standard for what fans can expect, except, that isn’t entirely how I’ll be approaching this game. I want to bear in mind the fact that there are millions of players like me that were introduced to the series with 2, and played forward, never going back to the first. I mean, the second game sold 4 times as many copies, so it makes sense that a wider audience hadn’t played it, but upon release, Borderlands 1 was received well, and more importantly, laid the foundation for ideas and lore that would be expanded upon in Borderlands 2. It’s hard to justify going back to the first game when the second improved on every aspect of it, but because of how revolutionary the second game was, and how the foundations for the series were damn near reworked from the ground up, we can find value in playing something that, despite starting the series, feels oddly alien to Borderlands. Unfortunately we can also find flaws in something so alien. I mean, Just because the game feel is different, because it does suck sometimes, doesn’t give it inherent value; and it’s for this exact reason that I think Borderlands 1 deserves a remake.
Borderlands on PC is a solid experience. Borderlands GOTY has all the DLC included, and is thus the best way to experience Borderlands 1. Now that Borderlands 4 is around the corner, and since we already looked at Borderlands 2, now is a great time to look at the first game, which compared to Borderlands 3, is now deserving of a Borderlands remake. Especially after the disappointing Borderlands movie, more than ever, Borderlands deserves a remake, This Borderlands review, Borderlands critique, and Borderlands analysis, is part of a larger Borderlands retrospective.
