Hey, everyone. Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2024 Mazda CX-5, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver. But let's check this one out first, make sure it's gonna be the right hitch for you. These trailer hitches just aren't meant for pulling a trailer anymore. You know, there's a lot of other accessories out there that you can use with these, whether it be a bike rack or a cargo carrier.

Regardless of what you're trying to do, having this back here is gonna allow you to get that job done. To compare this hitch to some of the other ones available, they're all gonna be pretty much the same. You know, there's a few minor differences, but the Curt hitch, we have more of a gloss black finish. The etrailer, that's probably my favorite as far as how it looks. That has more of a matte black carbide finish.

It almost matches the plastic on the bumper spot on. And then there's a Draw-Tite hitch. Again, looks very similar, but it's more of a semi-gloss, so nothing really too crazy there. I will say that the Draw-Tite hitch does have a little bit higher-capacity, so it can handle a little bit more weight. So if that's what's really important to you, it's probably worth checking that one out.

This is a class 3 hitch, meaning it has the two-inch by two-inch receiver tube opening, which is a good thing. That's a really common size, so a ton of different accessories will work with it. It is going to use that standard 5/8 pin and clip. One doesn't come with the hitch. If you need one, not a huge deal.

Get it here at etrailer. A lot of times too, if you end up buying a new accessory, it'll come with one. So something to look out for there. As far as the safety chain openings go, loop style, and plenty big the wide to use just about any size hook that your trailer might have on it. This is gonna have some pretty good numbers. Maximum gross tongue weight rating is gonna be 600 pounds, which is the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. And with that, that's good enough for just about any size bike rack or cargo carrier, just to give an example. And for the maximum gross-trailer weight rating, that's gonna be 4,000 pounds, or the amount of weight pulling on the hitch. That is the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have in or on it. I do always like to recommend though, it's never a bad idea just to grab your Mazda's owner's manual. That way you can check in there and make sure that your CX-5 can handle that amount of weight safely. We'll grab a couple measurements now, and these will help us figure out what type of accessories will work best. We go from the ground to the top-inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's gonna be about 13 1/2 inches. For those of you pulling a trailer around, you can probably use a ball mount that has a rise in the shank. That two to four-inch range would probably work well in most situations. And if it we inchesre me and I was looking to buy a new accessory, I'd probably try to find one that also has a rise, just to buy me a little more ground clearance back here. But if you already have one that has a straight shank, that'll work out just fine too. If you go from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, that's gonna be about four inches, which is pretty good. We shouldn't really run into too many issues here. But if need be, you can use that to help figure out exactly if any of those folding type accessories that you might have can be stored in the upright position without hitting the back of your Mazda. Other than that, not much to it. A hitch you really can't go wrong with. I think it looks good, and you can pull your trailer, use your accessories, or do whatever you're trying to get done with it. As far as the installation goes, it's not really too complicated. Some points can be kind of a pain. It's just a little tight, you know You don't have a ton of room to work in during some points of the installation process, but it's definitely doable at home for sure. With that said, if this is something that you don't feel like messing with or have the time or place to work on it, I definitely understand that.
